In order to provide some relief to the residents of Delhi, the government has announced that it will sell onion at Rs. 50 per kg at 1,000 points from August 17, 2013. The government added that a total of about 150 mobile vans will be deployed to sells onion at Rs. 50 across the city.
The vans will visit four places in a locality, which means that they will cover a total of 600 points. Moreover, the vegetable will be made available at a total of 400 stores, including 280 Mother Dairy outlets. Reports said that Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is worried about the high prices of onion and has to face assembly elections after just three months.
Dikshit has told the Food and Supplies Department to come down hard on those hoarding the vegetable. In 1998, BJP was voted out of power in Delhi after spiraling onion prices. Onion is sold at Rs. 70 to 80 per kg in most areas of the city. However, at Azadpur mandi in Delhi, the prices of onion have remained at the earlier level of Rs. 50-55.
The Chief Minister has also asked the departments concerned to keep a close watch on the prices of essential commodities, which include pulses, tomato, sugar and onion.
