Japan-based auto manufacturer Toyota is recalling 200,000 of its vehicles worldwide for a problem with a hybrid system. The company is also recalling another 169,000 vehicles for a defect in an engine bolt.
Shino Yamada, the spokeswoman for Toyota said that there were no accidents related to the recalls. The first recall has been made over an inverter in the hybrid system for the Lexus RX400 and the Highlander models in the overseas market. In Japan, the Harrier and Kluger hybrids have been recalled due to this issue. About 141,000 vehicles have been recalled in the US and 15,000 in Japan.
Toyota said that the defect is likely to cause an alarm to go off and the hybrid might stop running. The second recall is about the Lexus GS350, IS350, Crown and Mark X models, including 106,000 vehicles in the US and 59,000 vehicles in Japan. The automaker has said that the bolts might loosen and cause the engine to stall.
In the past five years, the reputation of Toyota has been tarnished due to massive global recalls, which have affected almost all models in the line up and more than ten million vehicles. The company was also criticized for not admitting quality defects and not initiating proper recalls fast enough.
