Auto giant Hyundai Motors and its affiliate, Kia Motors Corp. announced that they will recall more than 660,000 vehicles sold in South Korea. The country’s transportation ministry on September 25, 2013 said that the vehicles will be recalled because of faulty brake light switches, which could lead to a failed ignition.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea said that the defective light switch can also lead to the malfunction of cruise control system. The recall will affect a total of 662,519 vehicles of 15 various types, including 185,176 units of the Hyundai Sonata, which have been manufactured between October 1, 2008 and January 31, 2011.
The South Korean ministry in a press release said, “The latest recall was prompted by the same problem that led to a recall of over 160,000 vehicles in April”. Owners of the recalled vehicles will be able to get a free repair service from October 1, 2013, at any Hyundai or Kia service centers. The final list of vehicles affected by the latest recall will be available at the automakers’ service centers.
The country’s ministry said that it will also be recalling particular model year Lexus vehicles for defective variable valve timing (VVT) system, which could cause ignition to be switched off while the vehicle is in operation.
