The Airports Corporation of Vietnam announced that Tan Son Nhat Airport – which is located in Ho Chi Minh City – has been upgraded and expanded its domestic terminal in order to increase its capacity to five million travelers on a yearly basis. The corporation said that the Departure Hall A – which is the latest addition to the airport – was put into use on April 21, 2014 and the hall represents the first phase of an upcoming project which has a goal to upgrade, as well as expand the complete domestic terminal.
The new section of the airport spans 2,140 square meters and features check-in rows, luggage carousels and a number of offices. In addition to that, there are now four airport body scanners, six baggage-scanning systems, as well as six boarding gates. It has been reported that VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific started using the latest section on the same day.
Moreover, the old section of the Tan Son Nhat Airport will be renovated and should be put back into use in the upcoming four months. The corporation’s expansion project also has a second phase, in which the waiting area at the domestic terminal will reportedly be 2,000 square meters larger and a technical section will be built as well.
Once everything is done, the upgraded domestic terminal will span 39,450 square meters and will be able to handle 4,500 passengers on an hourly basis during break periods. In addition to that, the renovated and expanded terminal will be able to cater to 12 million passengers each year.
