Residents of Delhi are facing an acute water shortage after protestors sabotaged the main canal that supplies most of the city. Reports say that more than 10 million people in the city are without water. The army has taken control of the Munak Canal after the Jat community protestors had seized it.
The head of Delhi’s water board Keshav Chandra said that it would take three to four days before the normal supplies resume. All the schools in Delhi are shut down due to the water crisis. Three days of riots have killed sixteen people while hundreds have been injured.
The population of Delhi is about sixteen million and the three-fifths of the city’s water supply are done by the canal that runs through Haryana. Chandra informed that some people managed to save water after issuing warnings while tankers have been sent to the affected areas of the city but that will not be enough to make up for the shortage.
More reports have revealed that protestors have also blocked roads and the protestors have refused to budge. The army has taken control of certain parts of the canal but repair work is expected to take some time. One of the demonstrators said that they do not trust anyone and that they would like to have everything in writing.
