Recent reports suggest that North Korea has restarted one of its nuclear reactors, which stopped its operations back in 2007. The latest move made by North Korea is most likely going to increase suspense on the Korean Peninsula, before the beginning of military exercises by the US, South Korea and Japan.
One of the news agencies from South Korea mentioned that the Yongbyon nuclear reactor continued its operations and it was previously announced by the North Korean government that it is planning to resume operations at the facility, which is located 55 miles north of Pyongyang. The news agency of North Korea on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 announced that it placed its troops on emergency alert and is set to launch operations against the drills at any moment.
The drills were supposed to be carried out between October 8, 2013 and October 10, 2013 in the South Korean waters, but they had to be postponed because of the bad weather. Experts who were interviewed by Yonhap said that the statement appears to be tied to efforts to continue disarmament-for-aid negotiations involving China, the US, Japan and Russia.
The US has discouraged the attempts made by China to resume talks, because of the lack of seriousness from the regime of Kim Jong-Un.
